Berwick Heritage: seeking to preserve the vanishing beauty of Berwick

We are a group of residents who are concerned about the erosion of Berwick's historic charm.

URGENT: Stop the intrusive car park development at Berwick Bridge

Please watch our video, object, and sign our petitions.

Northumberland County Council has submitted a proposal to demolish buildings at the south side of the old bridge, and put a car park there for at least five years. This flawed proposal for arguably the most sensitive and historic part of Berwick, used for over 150 years as a sculpture yard, must be stopped. The deadline for public consultation is 26th September.

The huts at 5 Palace Street

We are advocating for the preservation of a WWI Army hut and a 1908 Speirs corrugated iron classroom, and avoid overdevelopment in an area solely populated by buildings between 100 and 400 years old. We believe the developer's needs can be met for much less money by reusing the huts, simultaneously saving money, the conservation area, and the wonderful views from the Town Walls. Click here for our alternative plan, 'A Sustainable Alternative'.

You can see this site from the what3words location ///stump.danger.soon, near Ness Gate.

The application was granted permission on 23rd March 2023, but we will continue to raise awareness of what Berwick and its visitors are about to lose. See our statement.

Please sign our petition change.org/savethehuts to save two historic huts and irreplaceable views from the Town Walls.

NEWS: The Grammar School is for sale and has a closing date of 20th March 2024. If a sale is forthcoming, we wish the new owners luck and urge them to restore the WWI Army hut and Speirs building to keep these historic and unusual buildings for Berwick and future generations. The property has now been bought by Michael Guthrie.
