Maltings construction plans lodged including Marygate traffic lights

10th June, 2026

Willmott Dixon Construction have clarified some of their Maltings demolition, construction and archaeology plans in a planning application on the NCC portal:

25/04579/VARYCO: Discharge of Condition 3 (Demolition and Construction Method Statement), 4 (Stopping Up of Public Highway), 23 (Surface Water Disposal) and 27 (Archaeological Investigations) on approved planning application

We can expect ‘temporary’ traffic lights on Marygate for the duration of the build – that is, several years – to direct traffic flow in and out of West Street, since Eastern Lane is too narrow for the construction vehicles. Obviously this will cause traffic to back up along Marygate, down Hide Hill, up Castlegate and along the New Bridge.

Other highlights include the fact that workers will be encouraged to cycle to work. Parking is going to be tight for visitors given workers will need to occupy long-stay car parks. “Advance Northumberland have identified areas of undeveloped land within Berwick town centre and are working to make these areas available for parking.”

Good luck, everybody!
