How to object

Anyone can object, wherever they live. Comments may be anonymous. Objections are the most important tool we have as heritage advocates to send a message to the decision-makers in the council.

Some of the grounds you might cite are: the case for protection of the beautiful conservation area for all to enjoy; the case for protection of iconic views from the Town Walls (a scheduled monument); the case for preserving the historic WWI Army hut and the rare 1908 Speirs classroom. You can read existing objections online for further inspiration. Not everyone will agree with preserving the huts, but many will agree that the current large, generic, 6.4m-high new builds will spoil this much-loved beauty spot, and that a more sympathetic development is required.

Method 1: Online. You can object online by clicking on this link: 24/03631/FUL . You will need to create an account if you haven't already, and then under the Comments tab, click Make a comment. If possible, please copy and paste the same comment into the Listed Building Consent application too: 24/03632/LBC.

Method 2: By email. You can object by emailing the case officer at PlanningComments@northumberland.gov.uk. Click on PlanningComments@northumberland.gov.uk to start writing your email. Please use a subject line similar to: "For the attention of Mr Will McKane, Planning Officer, application 24/03631/FUL and 24/03632/LBC". Then write to Mr McKane stating that you object to the application, and why. For your comment to be considered, you must include (1) your name, (2) your full postal address, and (3) the reference number or site address of the application your comment is for (in this case, it's 24/03631/FUL and 24/03632/LBC).

Method 3: By letter. You can object by writing to the case officer: Mr Will McKane, Planning Officer, Planning Department, County Hall, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE61 2EF. Cite case 24/03631/FUL and 24/03632/LBC and tell Mr McKane that you object to the application, and why. Be sure to include your name and full postal address, or your comment may not be considered.
